One of the earliest synthetic rubbers that was impervious to oil was Chloroprene Rubber (CR), better known by its brand name Neoprene rubber strips. Its resistance to lubricants and fuels derived from petroleum is, however, only moderate. It has a nice combination of chemical and physical qualities, making it a good all-purpose rubber. Its physical qualities are somewhat inferior to those of natural rubber, but it is more resistant to heat, ozone, chemicals, and oils. As one of the few rubbers that is self-extinguishing, chloroprene has good flame resistance and a relatively low gas permeability. Neoprene has good resilience and produces great rubber-metal bonding. While they will melt upon heating, some grades of neoprene may crystallize and stiffen while being stored. Chloroprene’s many beneficial qualities and affordable price make it a widely utilized substance. Belting, coated textiles, cable jackets, seals, and gaiters are examples of common uses. DuPont Performance Elastomers is the registered trademark holder of Neoprene.
